Today marks the 75th day of smog-free-Joni. Never have i thought in my 4  softcore smoking years that i will stop to puff. My first puff was dated back in my university time, where i bought a pack of dunhill light.  I didn’t cough at my first stick, my 2nd stick till the last stick (over a period of 1 week). So, since then i decided to like smoking (duh!).. When i started working in July 2005, i’ve transformed from being an occasional smoker to a must-smoke-1 pack-a day smoker.

Dari ‘rokok panas’ to ‘rokok sejuk’ (Alasan: rokok sejuk kurang sikit kesan dia dari ‘rokok panas’.. kununla..)

Macam naga! Macam keretapi pun ada! Ba biasala kebaru-baruan kan! Macam chimney! Patut pun Santa Clause tidak mo datang!

Kalau di tempat civilised sikit hisap pall mall hijau (sebab paling murah antara rokok mahal), kalau di kampung2, hisap la astro sejuk (range harga Rm1.50 -Rm2.50 sekotak)…

Everyday (especially during night time), i struggled unconsciously with my breathing pace. It was not that i did not care about my inner body system, but i just felt like i need to smoke.. Now that is what we call as addiction (minor! for my case).. Heard stories of my hardcore smokers friends. They’ll use just about anything that emits smoke (to create the ‘smoking sensation’, e.g heard about people using dried tea leaves as tobacco substitute?).

Oh oh, then came one day, my boss (who used to smoke together with me and fody) stopped smoking.

‘Oh pandai balik juga tuh merokok’

Ok..that was what we concluded from his sudden decision. Adede… nope, memang he stopped smoking completely! Another news came by, the (most) hardcore smoker in our team; Uncle Johnny also quits smoking. Usually, our meeting has to be paused several times (5 mins minimum) just to give time for smokers, by his request..but during our last meeting, not a word of ‘take five for smokers’ came out…..Apakah..Huhu… My boss then promoted a book that has successfully put the cigarette away from many people including himself and Uncle Johnny;

The easy way to stop smoking by Allen Carr.

Curious..How..What makes them stop? The ads on TV are scary enough to make people quit but i guess, the ads fail miserably (sample case: me, haha). My numerous attempts to quit smoking  also seemed to fail (just like the ads).

Mesti mau cuba ne tau. Apa juga bikin diorang berhenti.

So, i searched at my fave online bookstore, and yup, the book’s there with a good price tag (Rm80.00).. Just when i was considering on forking out a chunk of my money for that Allen Carr’s book, a caring friend, Max sent me a pdf version of it (Thanks Max).

The book is simple, it explains the myths of why we thought we need to smoke, and yes the ads on the dangers of smoking (cancer, kidney problem, etc) just don’t work. Tried as much as possible to read it on a ‘normal’ mode, not be pressured on the fact that many people had quit smoking after reading this book.

Chapter after chapter, i still enjoyed smoking..and finally, I had my last cigarette when i was on Chapter 12. The next day, i have less urge to smoke and i never looked at the stick the same way i looked at it before i decided to quit.. until today! Hooray!

Joni, sedap ba nie rokok.. ba 1 kali ja ba.. Joni, ui nda la aku percaya ko berenti, aku bagi ko ni rokok la, sama2 kita… Joni, rugi owh ko..punya men sedap nie…

Haha.. adede..lucu pula…

The taste of the stick is awful (yup, admit it), yeah, maybe i had enough of it already..Looking back, it was indeed fun merokok.. i met new friends through smoking….Nevertheless, it’s time for me to move on with my life, without the stick. Pray that i stay the way i am now for the rest of my life, Amen..

(For those who seriously want to stop smoking, or anybody who might want to share this book to others in need, please give me your email address. Will attach the pdf file to you).

and no, this is not a paid advertisement.

My kampung river

My kampung river

Isn’t it lovely.. The river is the main reason why i love my kampung in Ulu Kimanis, Papar so much….

So clear

So clear

Still remember, since i was a child, me, my siblings and my cousins, never stop loving this river. So clear as its watershed (Crocker Range) is still in its pristine condition. Yet, i never realised how lucky we are to have a kampung with a very healthy river that is just less than 3 minutes walk from my nenek house until i work in Kinabatangan since four years ago, where its river is so teaish in color (and polluted as well). Sometimes, we will only start to believe and thus react after we see the consequences and experience them with all our senses. Hopefully, the river in my kampung will always be in this condition and continued to be the soft spot of my dear heart.

Welcome to my version of ‘the greatest invention’. Before i can recommend this great invention to everyone, below are criteria that i look into:-

a) Ease/Solve problem immediately (any problem!)

b) Cheap! Cheap! Cheap!

c) Light weight, very mobile…

d) Non toxic to kittens/cats/dogs/chicken etc.

I came across some good invention (invented by i-dunno-who-are-her), tough time to choose the best invention (according to my standard!)… After a few cup of black coffee..my mind finally made up its decision… hehe.. the winner? (drum rolls…) Give a big huge and fat clap to  PELEKAT LALAT!!.. Kudos to anybody who invented this and marketed this and for having faith in this PELEKAT LALAT as this is what we (in Sukau!) definitely need (desperately) at this time.

for noti-noti flies

for noti-noti flies

Too many flies will spoil the soup… Siapa mau makan sup yang ada lalat mati di dalam. Or having to face every morning, afternoon and evening with wet feet of the flies ‘perching’ on your lips, ears, hands, eyelids etc. In Sabahan belief, the flies-season means drought season is coming. Problem indicates the coming of another ‘possible problem’.. But with this PELEKAT LALAT, the effect of the problem is lessen. Imagine, this thing attracts the flies with its ba-kick rotten fish smell (paning ya), and by the time they realise that it is only a trap, it would be too late! The powerful sticky material  (which is mixed with the rotten thingy) will be their never wanted graveyard (mass graveyard i would say!). Say goodbye to flies! hehe…

p/s : I plan to bring some of these PELEKAT LALAT to my kampung in Papar this weekend..

yay!

yay!

I woke up this morning at 7am only to find out that my precious crocs has dissappeared. At first, i tot, “ah..ada urang pinjam mengkali, pergi beli breakfast,”….pinjam la mengkali….i searched hi and lo, in and around our Sukau house, until out of my senses, my mind accused Trevor, our full time dog yang pinjam.. but well, enda la ba kan… So 1 hour of physically searching and mentally challenging on question of why? why? why it happens? .. i finally cooled down… and accepted the fact that the crocs have BEEN STOLEN BY I DUNNO WHO…  To ease my mind, i called my BFF aka GFF and we summed up everything:-

  • Tidak apala… Memang tiada rezeki mau pakai itu kasut lama-lama (ya.. mau haus suda tengah2 crocs tuh).
  • Pencuri itu memang selalu jalan-jalan di rumah untuk mencuri mana yang dia mau (ermmm… if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail).
  • Pandai juga pencuri itu, sebab he only took crocs, despite ada lagi sandals yang lain yang orites… (ini no comments).
  • Biarlah…the pencuri maybe tidak mampu mau beli selipar baru, so he decided to steal other people’s punya… (Jadi macam aku menderma la kan… ok…really comforting words to sum up the incident).
  • “Lain kali.. simpan di luar lagi ya…”… waw.. sungguh penyindiran…

Nevermind la… everything happens for a reason…

a threesome? urgghh

a threesome? urgghh

Captured this at the famous Menanggul River in Sukau during my boat ride last tuesday. haha.. memang semangat tolong menolong juga nie. Think this is something that we should learn from these threesome fellows;there are times when we need people to be by our side and help us to do things that we alone are incapable to do . Everyone needs each other. Once we reach the state of interdependence, then only can we understand the real meaning of living in same earth with other breathing things.

KK to Singapore for only Rm91? That was what i paid for my recent journey to Tanah Semenanjung in March 2009. After doing the calculations here and there, no harm for me to try new route (Kalu kira2,  murah aku bayar Flite ticket KK-SIN + cost travel Sukau-KK  + Train ticket SIN-KL + makan2 cost in SIN if compared to the air ticket fare SDK-KL at the same time aku booked Jetstar). Come to think about it, flying with Air Asia to KL is quite a norm for me well for the past 2 years. Less excitement..sebab suda biasa..tapi bila suda sampai, lain sorita la..ada orang jemput di aepot..teehee…anyway,Feels so good that i stepped out from my comfort zone, getting my feet on foreign land in an usual yet less travelled route via Jetstar (bagus ko ni Jetstar)…

I reached Changi Airport at 10am after 2 1/2 hours journey from KK. Typical question popped out from my kampungan head, “Now What?’. haha..Got my fingers on each travel guide brochures that i came across, filtered them and used only one, which i found was user-friendly..Travelling alone here required me to be more alert for my next destination, Stesen Keretapi Tanjong Pagar. Yes, i travelled to KL by train from Singapore. But the train leaves at 10pm. Had 10 hours to kill in Singapore. Now What? MRT la!

My first stop was at Bugis Junction. It looks as luxurious as The Curve in Damansara and hell yeah, the place was so jammed crowded with peeps. Managed to get my self free juice drinks (3 cups, haha) after struggling a few minutes with other thirsty peeps . Had my lunch (for SGD 3.50) at one chinese restaurant near Bugis; where the owner insisted to talk to me in chinese, even though i spoke in english. haha. funny moment that i alone enjoyed..haha..

Nyum nyum..

Nyum nyum..

Have to love walking; a lesson i learnt from a filipino fren of mine in Manila, who kept on reminding me  the joy of maximising the main function of my two legs (i ended up walking more than 5km along Manila Bay from Rizal Park). So, i did the ‘exercise’ again in Singapore, marching (left right left) from Bugis area right up to underground shopping mall; The Intercity Mall, which connects some of the city’s best shopping mall. And it was packed with peeps too. Suddenly i found my way up to a place that i have totally no idea that it existed (pardon me, i didn’t study Singapore interesting places before i flew here); looks like a giant bug rising out of the trees, my first impression (sendiri-sendiri), yup the Esplanade Theatre aka Theatre on The Bay. Cool looking design. Saw a lot of budak sekolah near the compound (well i assumed budak sekolah la sebab they all wore same uniform).

Kota Singa

Kota Singa

Suddenly i heard good music near the bay, sounds of acoustic guitar, drums (ok, banyak lagi bunyi of instruments, that i failed to recognize, duh!) and an absolutely amazing soulful, thick voice. I followed my ears and saw a band performing in an open stage with lotsa peeps (again) enjoying their music.  The music were so good that i nearly forgot about Stesen Keretapi Tanjong Pagar, and the skies looked like a big fat sponge waiting for its due to downpour. Yay!

Ayoh! Teruskan Perjalanan! I walked passed by The Famous Merlion, icon for Singapore.  Unfortunately it was under maintenance, covered with bluish netting. Tidak apala. Aku nampak jua akhirnya. Hehe. sambil makan an ice cream block (mint flavour) with wafer! A perfect combination for a snack (SGD 0.50).

good food for the soul

good food for the soul

Along the way while walking to Tanjong Pagar (maybe more than 3km, agak-agak la), i prayed hard that God has mercy on me…Janganla hujan..janganla hujan… Sudah la panat mengangkat backpack, kalau hujan lebat lagi, memang…memang..memang lai tu..ai.. haha… and terima kasih, hujan rintik-rintik saja. Once i set my tired-ang-legku at the stesen, i went straight to the counter to confirm the legality of my e-ticket (i bought from internet…moden juga nie KTM). Scanned around, spotted a very good aka cosy place to doze off a while. Ikat my beg to the benches, and kroih-kroih.

Woke up at 8pm, took my bath in the toilet (costs me SGD 0.50). Nothing beats the feel of cool water selepas panat mengukur jalan tadi. Sendiri-sendiri kebanggaan that i walked many-many kilometers. haha.. The penjaga toilet asked me if i come from Sabah (dalam hati, wow, sangat betul). Rupanya, it is unlikely for  a chinese looking man/woman (like me) to speak good command of Bahasa Indonesia Malaysia. And he went on blah blah blah on how beautiful Sabahan women are. Trus aku lari… Tidak sanggup dengar, sebab tidak terasa pun..haha…

Having a fantastic noodle soup and  teh tarik along the train railway..i was in the state of admiring every single second, chewing my food and sipping the teh tarik while imagining filem dulu-dulu P.Ramlee yang belakon di Stesen Keretapi. What a moment to be remembered on my last hour in Singapore that day.

makan siring railway

makan siring railway

10pm arrived, and so did the train. After my ticket was checked, i immediately searched out for my gerabak. Not bad for RM76 (ok, agak mahal sikit compared to same class in Malaysia). Besides me, was an old lady who kept on ‘critizing’ the way i leaned my head near the window. what ever makcik ninik!

The Gerabak

The Gerabak

It was my first time travelling in train, and it was awesome (kampungan juga aku masa tuh, asek2 tingu kiri-kanan). Memang slow macam kura-kura, tapi tatap this keretapi memory will linger in my mind sampai abis nyawa sa (punya memberi gali!). Near midnight, the kura-kura stopped at Woodland. Checking passport ya. The policemen and women (weewit) brought their tough looking dogs to sniff around our belongings. All passengers were instructed to wait at the small air-conditioned lobby. Waiting anxiously (and hoping ada case seperti menjumpai dadah bahan merbahaya jenayah supaya buli nampak how the special case is being handled..punya positive fikiran sa).. i munched my last piece of tau sa bun (from KK..yay!)..Finally the sniffing work by the dogs has finally over, we went back to our gerabak and i fell into sleep.

Reached Sentral at 6.30am after multiple stops along the way from Woodland. Got few times i was getting bored with all the stops-awhile at other stesen. Macam rasa mau pergi gerabak paling depan, tempat driver, dan biar aku take over. Tidak payah stop-stop. haha…aiyah..jan jua begitu nanti salah railway.

Regret was not in my mind at all points of my journey on the less traveled route to KL. I felt so DAMN GOOD (oh ya, ada sebuah kampung di Sabah bertajuk Kampung Kitai…).. , contented and proud that i let my unconcious mind to lead me to go against what i called my norm (selalu ingat Air Asia saja). Will never forget the 10 hours i spent for the first time in a city called Singapore. I will definetely consider using the route again for the next journey to only God knows What’s on my mind..(im so indecisive ba)…
